Yorkshire in Bloom
Mill Bank village strives to provide a positive environment which benefits villagers and visitors. The Mill Bank Group has a commitment to improve the surrounding areas by planting flowers, bulbs and maintaining a general cleanliness to all areas in Mill Bank. As part of this commitment, the village regularly enters the Yorkshire in Bloom competition in the ‘Small Village’ category.
Mill Bank village has been very successful, achieving the Gold award for six consecutive years. Our most recent judging achieved a Silver Award.
Yorkshire in Bloom is an annual competition to encourage communities of whatever size; small villages, towns or a big city, to make a positive and lasting improvement to their local environment for the benefit of local people. Yorkshire in Bloom encourages and develops community spirit whilst promoting responsibility for planting, cleanliness and maintenance. It also promotes voluntary work and cooperation between community groups, and is a means to address issues such as sustainability, recycling, minimising waste and energy conservation.
The competition is assessed by local judges on criteria developed by the Royal Horticultural Society in consultation with the Regions. Marks are awarded and are related to standards of Gold, Silver Gilt, Silver and Bronze.
Yorkshire in Bloom holds an annual awards ceremony in September at which the awards are announced. Five of the best are then invited to represent Yorkshire in the RHS national finals in ‘Britain in Bloom’ the following year.
